Sustainable construction

Almost 40% of a building’s CO₂ emissions are generated before anyone moves in – through the transport, production and disposal of materials. The remainder is produced later during operation, for example through heating, cooling and electricity consumption. That is why Saint-Gobain promotes sustainable lightweight construction solutions across the entire value chain to reduce emissions and conserve resources – with clear goals and measurable results.

Sustainable products with measurable climate benefits

Our sustainable products make a verifiable contribution to climate protection. We deliberately develop them to be more environmentally friendly – through lower-emission production, responsibly selected raw materials and business models that are ecologically, socially and economically viable in the long term. High quality and verified environmental product declarations ensure transparency and long-term benefits.

Measuring and reducing emissions

We prepare comprehensive life cycle assessments and environmental product declarations (EPDs, KBOB) for our products – verified by independent bodies. By 2030, we aim to provide such evidence for all products. This enables us to identify precisely where we can reduce emissions across the entire life cycle.

Support for building certifications

Our products meet the requirements of leading environmental labels such as Minergie, LEED and BREEAM – supporting sustainable building design and certification.

Climate-friendly production and transport

Sustainable production

We produce as regionally as possible and keep transport routes short to reduce emissions across the supply chain. At the same time, we continuously optimise our production processes – focusing on energy consumption, water and packaging.

Saint-Gobain is aiming for net zero by 2050. By 2030, we plan to reduce direct and energy-related emissions (Scope 1 & 2) by 33% and upstream and downstream emissions (Scope 3) by 16% compared to 2017. We also want to reduce our process water consumption by 50%.

In Switzerland, our production companies implement binding target agreements with the federal government. These include energy efficiency programmes, replacing fossil fuels with renewable sources, and electrifying plants and means of transport.

Responsible supply chains

We regularly review our supply chains and work to further strengthen sustainability standards among our suppliers and ensure they are applied consistently.
